Do you have a floor and some shoes?

It’s that time of year… You want to get fitter and less fat—but how?

When people want to better themselves, all kinds of questions start to arise—what should I do? What equipment do I need? And so on… and because of COVID—this year is even worse than previous years. There is a lot of uncertainty right now—questions like, are we getting back to work? Are the schools closing—again? Are the fitness centers going to stay open? And so on.

This time of year has always been hard, but now we have all of this extra uncertainty on top of it. So, what should you do? Well, we will try to make this matter as “easy” as possible.

Firstly, you’ll need to get started—so, in the spirit of the Coffee Talkers, we will set the bar as low as possible and start from there. So, let’s start with a quote from the great thinker David Goggins.

Is there a floor where you live, and do you have some shoes?

The point of this quote is to highlight that you don’t need anything to get started. You don’t need motivation, a gym membership, or any specialized equipment to get started. If you have a floor—then you can do squats, push-ups, sit-ups, hyperextensions, etc. And if you have shoes, then you can go for a walk or a run.

Find a thing that you’re willing to do and do it. Execution and consistency are the drivers of anything worthwhile—So, stop looking for the best option or equipment and put on your shoes. When you’re walking, now is the time to think about what equipment or fitness strategy you want to try next—which neatly ties into the next topic.

Which equipment yields the best return on investment?

Anyone who has followed our articles or Scott’s Instagram page lately knows that we like a minimalist approach to fitness. If we look at Scott’s daily routine—you’ll realize that Scott only uses two pieces of equipment.

  1. A kettlebell

  2. Gymnastics rings

This is all you need to build an impressive physique—of course, this approach does not offer many variations, but it yields a great return on investment. Remember, consistency and doing the work is what gives you the results that you want. You can choose to do specialized movement patterns to learn more stuff or to switch things up, but don’t do it because you think the grass is greener somewhere else.

Shiny object syndrome

We’re big believers in doing stuff which is good for you, and doing things that you enjoy doing. So, don’t take this article like there is only one way to get fit. There are infinite paths to any goal, and our takeaway is, that you should just get started.

This is not complicated, and you don’t need much equipment to get great results. We so often see that people overcomplicate this matter, and are always looking for that piece of equipment, program, or supplement that will get them on the right path…

So, put on your shoes and get to work, and feel free to visit Scott’s Instagram page if you need some inspiration or structure.

Good luck and until next time
