Taking our power back from Coronavirus
“I am so sick of this shit!” We’ve said it to ourselves often over these last eight months. Coronavirus continues to nip at our heels. Some countries are returning to lockdown yet again, some are facing new or stricter restrictions. Many people are facing economic hardships or new work situations that they would rather not face. When we find ourselves playing cat and mouse with this thing, and are constantly waiting for the next depressing shoe to drop, we are giving away our power.
Making empowering decisions
So this is how it is for a while. Maybe a long while. Maybe this is how life is now? Who knows. Unfortunately, it doesn’t exactly seem like world leaders have teamed up to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We have talked often about making empowering decisions for our health and training during this time. We didn’t feel good waiting around for gyms to open, and then, we didn’t feel good going to gyms and training in a mist cloud of sanitizer. We asked ourselves some basic questions: With all the time we have to wear a mask—do we want to wear one while training? And with all the times hand sanitizer might be a necessary evil—do we really want to be spraying ourselves and our training equipment continuously for an hour or two, all the while inhaling the antibacterial mist that’s floating around? Our answers were “No.” Let’s make some empowering decisions about how we’re going to train.
Home training
As we’ve mentioned in other articles, we are big fans of getting outside. If that’s not possible, throw open the windows and get some fresh air in your lungs—and get moving! If you don’t know where to start—check out this link to “What the Coaches are Doing—” it is a diary of the training we’ve been doing at home over the last eight months.
If you need some more inspiration, drop us an email. We are glad to give you some free tips, or set up training programs and do personal training sessions for reasonable fees, either in person or online. Make some empowering decisions about your training and health that are sustainable. We have talked to many hardcore fitness addicts that just didn’t train at all during lockdown periods. How much sense does that make? We want to stay strong and healthy, no matter what life throws our way.
Preparing to get sick
Wait, what? That’s crazy! Well, maybe not. Many of you know that Scott lived through the experience of his heart stopping for over 40 minutes. Cardiologists were quick to point out that his overall fitness level had a lot to do with his survival and the speed of his subsequent rehabilitation. His heart was forced to stop by a blood clot, but it was a strong heart that stopped—and once the clot was cleared, it was a strong heart that was able to start again. But it goes deeper than that. In any emergency, onsite paramedics and acute doctors will try that much harder, and longer, to save the life of a fit, healthy person. He was very well prepared to get sick.
With Coronavirus, we know that the older population is more vulnerable, and we also know that people who are obese, or have other chronic diseases are more likely to have complications. We also know that Vitamin D deficiency is a common factor in fatal cases. Of course, there are many points along this spectrum that we can fall into—but it makes sense to take our Vitamin D, and get as healthy and prepared for getting the virus as we can be. We believe that getting out and running, or run/walking at least three times a week is essential—we want healthy lungs! We are also big believers in high frequency training, or Microworkouts—shorter workouts that you do throughout the day to build volume, but that are not so intense. Super high-intensity workouts that really whack you, are also giving your immune system a whack—so we recommend a less intense approach for overall health. Here’s a link to a more in-depth article on High Frequency Training:

Sustainable survival techniques
No matter what your strategy is during these times, we think it’s important that it is sustainable, and that it is adding to your ability to fight viral threats if/when they come knocking on your door. We encourage you to make empowering decisions about your health and training, and control what you can in this often uncontrollable situation. There are other sustainable, immune system-boosting techniques, like breathing techniques and cold exposure, that we have discussed in detail in another article. Check it out at the following link:
what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger
