Refusing the Role of Victim

Many of us decide that we are our problems, that we are our bad habits, that we are victims of what others have done to us. We claim an identity based on this. It is a mask that we wear, a low energy vibration of victimhood that draws more experiences to us that reinforce our idea of being a victim. Whether we initially drew these experiences to us or not is immaterial. Once any tragedy has happened to us, the responsibility is now on our shoulders for what we do with this experience from here.

We can choose to learn from it, learn that we are survivors, that even the darkest experiences hold a golden opportunity to redefine them in a higher way. By doing this, we step out of victimhood and become true spiritual warriors. By seeing even tragedy as an opportunity to learn, we raise it from the idea of defeat to one of victory. In these current global times, this philosophy can be laid across the world‘s current events as a blueprint for our mental, physical, and spiritual survival. No matter how the world develops over the coming years, no matter what villains take the stage and cause great harm, it is possible to redefine the experience in a positive way. Maybe it draws us all together, neighbor to neighbor, as a family. Maybe in the midst of great chaos we find a deeper soul family that we resonate with and that we want to put our loving energies into.

If we play the victim, shaking our fist at the sky, condemning world leaders, and cursing their followers – we simply will draw ourselves into darkness. Surely we’ve all had a miserable day that has overtaken us, and in our negative state, we seem to draw more and more negative experiences to ourselves. Darkness attracts more darkness, but, thankfully, light attracts more light. There’s a great spiritual axiom: “That which you hold in darkness, draws you into darkness. That which you hold in light, draws you to the light.“

Reactions to politics on the global stage seem to garner emotions anywhere from concern to outrage. Perhaps it can be a comfort to reflect that science tells us that increased polarization and chaos in a system is always leading somewhere, and it is away from the initial energy that started the increased polarization.

Entropy is a measure of disorder or randomness in a system. Over time, systems tend to move toward higher entropy, meaning more disorder, or chaos. When a system reaches maximum entropy, it’s in a state of equilibrium, where energy is evenly distributed and no further work can be done. At that point, the system is in equilibrium, and no spontaneous processes occur.

Both entropy in a system and political polarization involve increasing disorder. Over time, systems naturally move toward equilibrium. In politics, equilibrium might mean a new balance, whether through reforms, shifts in power, or increased stability.

From this, one could draw the conclusion that even those described as “evil” or “moronic” could, in fact, be “useful idiots” and agents of change that bring the world to a better place.

At any rate, adopting this view takes us out of victimhood, and allows us to use our energy in positive ways in our families and communities. And perhaps we can find comfort in another golden spiritual axiom: “The light always dispels the dark.”

Until next time
